Education

We learn something new every day: education is the basis for an evolving society. However, our educational systems are not always inclusive or able to adapt. Moreover, we sometimes feel that the skills we learn are not adapted to the society we live in. How can we break gender stereotypes in education? How can we remove barriers to improve access to quality education for all? When will non-formal education receive the status it deserves?

In the past year, thousands of young people have shared their ideas on how to improve education in the European Union. Now is the time to put the spotlight on local organisations, projects and individuals working to make it happen.

School should better prepare young people for the practicalities of life

Schools should offer classes such as economics, health management and household classes to young people.

There should be mandatory classes in high school across the whole EU for at least two years that prepare minors for life. Classes such as economics, politics, health management or even household classes teaching basics of cooking, washing clothes etc. should better prepare young people for an adult life.

Rhythm  • 23 March 2024

I feel that, as stated above, financial literacy classes, meaning knowledge of how to manage taxes and loans, and the basics of politics, i.e, knowledge of the judicial system, should definitely be mandatory. Moreover, basic health literacy, meaning first aid, should also be taught.

However, apart from first aid, nutrition also needs to be taught, i.e, what to eat to stay healthy, what to eat when you have a stomach-ache, periods, etc..., and the nutritional and biological effects of certain kinds of food. Moreover, more practical skills, such as changing tires, household chores, as well as self-defence, are also crucial in my opinion.

You also believe that logical thinking and reasoning classes ought to be introduced, to teach students critical thinking and decision-making. Furthermore, general knowledge classes could also be very helpful.

Lastly, I feel that time management is a vital skill which should be taught in school, and also stress management i.e. how to deal with, tackle and manage stress. This is vital, as, in today's world, there is a lot of pressure, especially on youth, and, without knowledge on how to manage all the stress and pressure, one ends up being overwhelmed by everything.

Make politics more accessible to non-academics and people with learning disabilities

Can we make politics more accessible? Politics and information should be presented in different, more creative and accessible ways.

Current policies, strategies and agreements should be available in a more simplified language to citizens with learning disabilities. The language used, the abbreviations and specialized terms can mean that understanding relevant documents can be challenging and feel exclusive. Can we use the arts and/or digital ways of presenting the information to ensure people are well informed and feel included in the politics that shape our lives?

It would indeed be a good idea, however, only and if, it will also grant the right to refuse authenticated the person’s identity when it is not strictly necessary to, it should guarantee the privacy and security of data BOTH from private companies AND governments (unlike what eIDAS2.0 actually plans for in the Commission’s text), it should be decentralised so that the failure of a single end-point wouldn’t allow the gathering of all PII or information in general there stored, even better if End-To-End-Encrypted and under double encryption (person’s key and the data center’s) when at rest.
It also should be completely opt-in for the citizens (unlike what the Health Data Space and other EU
‘ideas’ are currently going to be as per the current text) based solely in the EU or EEA territory without any whatsoever service binding it to foreign laws and interest (eg. US’ C.L.O.U.D. Act/FISA 702 etc. etc.)

This is crucial on so many levels. Philosophy provides the foundations for the so much valued “critical thinking” and it is the best way to teach logic and how logic can also be deceitful when a succession of premises are used to point towards an unrelated conclusion. To teach things such as “correlation is not causation” can have a much wider impact when that is present while teaching any other areas of the curricula. It can bring enlightenment to ethics and foment interest in morals if taught from an early phase with an adequate complexity level.

Promoting EU Youth Goals!

The EU has developed concrete goals on how to better the situation of young people all over Europe. However, there is little knowledge in the wide public on the European Youth Goals. Especially as a follow-up to the European Year of Youth, it is important to show that young people are a priority of the EU. To achieve this, the EU should team up with national, regional, and local youth organisations, as well as with the Council of Europe, who have a lot of expertise to offer in implementing such programs in the field. Furthermore, the process has to be inclusive and reach young people in the spaces in which they are active, including Social Media and real life consultations.  Aside from this, the youth goals must reach unorganised youth and show them, that the EU cares about them by developing participation mechanisms that are open for individuals and that are well-funded to ensure that participation isn’t hindered by financial restrictions.

A European SAT to study all over Europe

It is extremely important to have an (optional) final examination at the end of high school, such as the SATs, so that young people in Europe have equal chances of getting into universities within the EU. Comparing the grades of a German citizen with those of an Austrian, for example, is not possible due to the vast differences in education and grading systems. However, for some study programs, one may need to go abroad. It is also crucial for young adults to explore new countries and cultures, which should be in line with the goals of the EU. The fact that studying within the EU is already fee-free is working exceptionally well.

Don't rule out mobility opportunities for young people in Hungary

As a member organization of the European Union, Hungary is also eligible to participate in Erasmus+ mobility programs, allowing not only Hungarian youth and educators to gain valuable experiences and professional expertise abroad, but also enabling thousands of students from all over the world to visit Hungary, get to know our country and study here. The total number of higher education students in Hungary were 294.000 in the 2021/22 academic year, 37.000 were foreign students. As a result of the measures, 182.000 students, including 30.000 foreigners, 62% of the students in Hungary, will lose the opportunity to gain international experience and many thousands young people from other Member States could lose the chance to study in Hungary through Erasmus+ at these universities. We urge the European Commission not to let young people become victims of the debate between the European Union and a member state government. We call on your political leadership to prevent student harm, therefore, it is important that in the future, decisions taken by the European Union institutions should not have a negative impact on young people, and that measures already adopted and in force should be amended without delay.

Allow more people to participate in multiple volunteering programmes

A volunteering programme should not just be a once in a lifetime experience.

Volunteering is an incredible program created by the EU, which lets young people from different countries abroad and learn more about what they want to become or other subjects they are interested. The main issue with this program is that they are a one time opportunity. I believe that volunteering should be supported more by the EU. People who have finished a long term volunteering participate in a new one, dividing the actual volunteering proposals for a first time volunteer and an experienced volunteer. This way people will talk more about this program and present it to young people to know about it.

Art and performance education should be recognised as higher education across the EU

If art graduates from art and performance schools were considered people with a higher education, maybe their wages could be improved.

In Greece and possibly other EU member states, students graduating from art schools (drama, music and schools) are currently not being granted high school diplomas, and their education is not recgonised as higher education This is wrong and should be changed. This can later lead to reductions in earnings under the pretext that it is "not legally skilled work". Shouldn't art schools be recognized for their contribution to the country's cultural education and treated similarly in all EU states?

Slavery Abolition Week lessons would adopt a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating various subjects such as history, literature, art, and social sciences. Financial education is crucial for future generations as it equips individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to make informed financial decisions. In a constantly evolving and complex financial landscape, understanding concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt becomes essential for long-term financial well-being.

By providing financial education, we empower young people to be financially independent, responsible, and equipped to navigate financial challenges they will encounter throughout their lives. Moreover, it cultivates a mindset of financial awareness and discipline, fostering a culture of economic stability and growth. Thus, integrating financial education into the education system ensures that future generations possess the tools to achieve financial security and make wise choices that positively impact their lives and society as a whole.

Laura  • 10 September 2023

Teaching financial literacy in schools is a vital and practical idea that can have a profound impact on the lives of young people. By equipping students with the knowledge and skills to manage their finances, we can help them make informed decisions and avoid common financial pitfalls in the future.

Financial literacy encompasses a wide range of topics, including budgeting, saving, investing, understanding credit and debt, and making responsible financial choices. These skills are essential for ensuring financial stability and independence in adulthood. By introducing financial literacy education early on, we empower students to build a solid foundation for their financial well-being.

Moreover, teaching financial literacy in schools has the potential to address the growing issue of financial inequality. It enables equal access to critical knowledge and resources that students from less privileged backgrounds might not have access to otherwise. By providing a level playing field, we can give all students an opportunity to develop the skills they need to succeed financially, regardless of their socio-economic background.

In addition, financial literacy education can have broader societal benefits. A financially literate population can contribute to a more stable economy, as people make informed decisions about their money and are less prone to poor financial choices. It can also reduce the burden on social support systems, as individuals become more self-sufficient and less reliant on public assistance.

However, implementing financial literacy education in schools requires comprehensive and well-designed curricula, trained teachers, and adequate resources. It is crucial that the education provided is practical and relatable to real-world situations, ensuring that students can apply the knowledge directly.

While challenges might arise in adapting existing curricula or finding the necessary resources, the long-term benefits of teaching financial literacy in schools far outweigh the costs and efforts involved. It is an investment in the future financial well-being of our youth and the overall economic stability of societies.

Lastly, I’d like to congratulate the person behind this great idea and share that’s good to realize we have young people fighting for such important changes in current models of education. It’s urgent to include financial education at schools, because as the author wrote “the issue of over-indebtedness is increasingly a global problem, and it can be avoided by providing people with a higher level of financial knowledge!”

Start teaching nutrition, finances and sustainability in schools

The school system should be reformed to give young people skills that are more useful for them. This can be done with subjects such as nutrition, personal finances and volunteering.

Nutrition should be taught in school, because global obesity has increased significantly. Legal education should be taught because it is necessary to know fundamental and essential rights and obligations in the main areas of law Financial education should be focusing on the precautionary and saving attitude of the individual, essential in order to know how to manage your money, basic principles of expenditure as a percentage depending on the needs. Furthermore, it is essential to educate students on sustainable development, for example how to manage the leftovers from daily meals, protect the environment and promote green life. Finally, from a young age, school children should be included in volunteering activities to address the development of the local community to which they belong. This will also give students more practical experience instead of just theoretical.

All traineeships should be paid or funded

There should be financing for all traineeships – be it at a national level, in the country of residence of students, in the embassies of the EU member states, embassies located in the country of the student’s residence, or in the office of the European Parliament of the country concerned, or at the European Commission’s representative in that country. Next to banning unpaid internships, there is a big need to making salaries for full-time positions transparent.
Currently, everyone must check external websites like Glassdoor to find out market rates for job positions which can be unreliable information. This lacking transparency only benefits employers and allows them to underpay their employees. Various states (recently New York) already made it mandatory for job postings to include a salary range. The EU should follow this example across all member states to ensure equality across all applicants (genders and nationalities). It would also improve salaries as companies would have to openly compete for applicants since they could easily compare potential earning potential across companies and even countries.

This is a major transparency problem in which the EU is lacking and should be solved.

Response to Adrian by Velimir  • 09 June 2023

As a result of the protests and trajectories that took place in Greece over the past year, I would like to refer to Presidential Decree 85 which equates the degrees of art schools (drama, musicians and dance schools), with regard to legislation, with a secondary school certificate. In other words, it does not recognise them as higher education. This may then lead to reductions in wages on the pretext that ‘legally not a specialised job’. This decision is a major ‘hurdle’ for people working in this sector and for the culture of Greece. Should artistic schools not be recognised for their contribution to cultural education in the country and treated in a similar way in all EU countries?

Covering housing and transport in Erasmus+ scholarships

The increase in the grant for erasmus scholarships would be essential: many students wish to undertake a practical traineeship in an EU country, but the costs of accommodation and transport are too high as the financing per student does not cover the costs of the student and it is often necessary to rely on own funds. Perhaps it is normal, but we should also take disadvantaged people into account. The costs of transport and accommodation involved in these experiences may lead to abandonment of the initiative, as the costs go beyond the threshold of the grant received. Therefore, the solution is not about increasing this grant per Erasmus + beneficiary, but rather guaranteeing the reimbursement of green transport and accommodation at a specific cost threshold. Thus, the amounts received outside these two costs could be significantly reduced .

More focus on safety in schools all over the EU

A safety program should be made compulsory in all EU member states, with a standardized content covering all possible situations that students and teachers might encounter.

The issue of safety in schools and universities is a crucial aspect in the field of education, which does not receive nearly as much attention as it should. Considering the many factors that have the potential to disrupt the academic process and even have long-term effects on the people affected – ranging from natural disasters to acts of violence between students – it is very important to be knowledgable about the measures we can adopt in each situation in order to protect ourselves and others from harm, while creating a secure, pleasant and intellectually stimulating learning environment. Unfortunately, in many European countries, safety instruction in schools and universities is either completely absent, or treated as something optional, left at the discretion of each institution. Such a program should be made compulsory in all EU member states, with a standardized content covering all possible situations that students and teachers might encounter, preferably delivered through a mix of presentations and role playing.

These people will follow the same political process, so there is no question of immaturity when someone is voted by almost 80.000 people in each. Rights are therefore only guaranteed by pluralism and the full potential of dialogue.

An example of this can be the use of AI generating art.
